 2010 Summer Healthcare Camp

Terrell State Hospital in conjunction with Lake Country Area Health Education Center and Texas Presbyterian Hospital-Kaufman hosted the 3rd annual Summer Healthcare Camp for 10 Terrell High School students.  These students will be a sophomore, junior, or senior next year.

Each year the goal of the Summer Healthcare Camp is to immerse the students in has many health care opportunities as possible.  This year was not different.  The camp ran from June 7, 2010 through June 11, 2010.  Camp started at 8:00 each morning and went until 4:30 in the afternoon.   The students were provided lunch and transportation.  The students experienced hands-on learning opportunities, as well as monitoring and observing doctors, nurses, and medical activities.   Each morning the students were assigned to nurses and doctors at Terrell State Hospital and Texas Presbyterian Hospital-Kaufman.   The students observed doctors and nurses interacting with patients, medical procedures, operations, and other medical facility practices.  In the afternoon the students made site visits to other healthcare facilities.

Site visits for the students during the week of the camp included: Garland Baylor Hospital, Risinger Veterinary Clinic, Baylor Medical Center of Terrell, TVCC Health Center for Nursing, and Prospect Mountain Therapeutic Riding Center.  The students also participated in an emergency response exercise for first responders on the grounds of Terrell State Hospital.

Each student received a camp notebook and a Graduation Certificate.   A Graduation Ceremony was held upon completion of the camp and many of the student's parents attended.
